NATO working on cyber attack trigger: commander

NATO countries are working to determine when a cyber attack would trigger the collective defense provision in the alliance's charter, a US general said on Thursday.

The alliance is "dealing with the issue around this and in cyber and working to define an understanding of what would be a trigger for Article 5," General Curtis Scaparrotti, the commander of NATO forces in Europe, told a US Senate committee.

Cyber peacekeeping is integral in an era of cyberwar – here’s why

Cyber warfare is upon us, from interference in elections to a leak of cyber weapons from a national stockpile. And, as with most evolutions in warfare, the world is largely unprepared. Cyber peacekeeping presents significant challenges, which we explore in our research.

Any theatre of war now includes cyberspace. It has been used in targeted attacks to disable an adversary’s capabilities, such as Stuxnet, where Iran’s ability to enrich weapon-grade Uranium was disrupted. It can also be exploited in traditional warfare through electronic interference with intelligence and communication systems.

New North Korean Hidden Cobra / Lazarus Campaign Targets Financial Institutions in Turkey

Hidden Cobra, also known as the Lazarus Group from North Korea, is now targeting the Turkish financial system with a new and 'aggressive' operation that resembles earlier attacks against the global SWIFT financial network.

An analysis published by senior analyst of major campaigns, Ryan Sherstobitoff, says McAfee believes this operation is intended to gain access to specific Turkish financial organizations via targeted spear-phishing, using a weaponized Word document containing an embedded Flash exploit. The Flash vulnerability only surfaced at the end of January 2018, but is thought to have been exploited by North Korean actors since mid-November 2017. It was patched by Adobe within a week; but any computer that has not yet updated Flash to the latest version will remain vulnerable.

From IDF to Inc: The Israeli Cybersecurity Startup Conveyor Belt

One definition of 'entrepreneur' is "a person who organizes and manages any enterprise, especially a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk." If Israel were a business, then its founders were entrepreneurs; and there is little wonder that the nation is imbued with an entrepreneurial spirit.

This spirit shapes Israeli business. Peter Rousseau, now with The Hackett Group, wrote last year, "Seventy-six Israeli companies are currently traded on the NASDAQ, behind only the United States and China. Israel exports $1,246 worth of hi-tech goods and services per capita compared to $488 for the U.S. and $295 for the rest of the world."
