Jerusalem Post Arab-Israeli Conflict CYBER-WAR NIGHTMARES: HOW CAN IRAN, HEZBOLLAH USE CYBER TO FIGHT ISRAEL?

With this weekend’s events shifting the country’s attention to envisioning the next potential war risks, the cyber-war playing field may once again come front and center.

Unfortunately, in estimating the cyber dangers potentially posed by Israeli adversaries, the danger list may be so long, that it might be easier to assume they can do almost anything and only mention the few things they cannot do.

Iran has laid groundwork for extensive cyberattacks on U.S., say officials

Iranian hackers have laid the groundwork to carry out extensive cyberattacks on U.S. and European infrastructure and on private companies, and the U.S. is warning allies, hardening its defenses and weighing a counterattack, say multiple senior U.S. officials.

Despite Iran having positioned cyber weapons to carry out attacks, there is no suggestion an offensive operation is imminent, according to the officials, who requested anonymity in order to speak.

Cyber threats have been a major theme of the 2018 Aspen Security Forum, with administration officials from Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, FBI Director Chris Wray, and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein all warning of the pervasive danger from Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea.

U.S. Army, Pentagon making cyberwar advances as enemies plan for devastating attacks on our critical infrastructure

In recent years, cyber warfare has vaulted to the top of a list of national security threats facing the U.S. in the second decade of the 21st century, and unfortunately, in many ways, our military is playing catch-up.

While we were focused on fighting low-intensity wars in Iraq and Afghanistan (now going on 17-plus years), our near-peer competitors — Russia and China — were developing cyber and electronic warfare capabilities in anticipation that their next war would not take place in the deserts and hills of some isolated country fighting men equipped mostly with small arms.

Russia, in particular, has developed a highly capable cyber and electronic warfare threat, the latter of which it has used successfully against American and coalition forces in Syria.

Cyberwarfare — the Latest Technology of Destruction

New technologies of destruction have appeared throughout history, from the trireme and gunpowder in past centuries to biological and nuclear weapons in more modern times. Each technology goes through a cycle of development and weaponization, followed only later by the formulation of doctrine and occasionally by efforts to control the weapon’s use. The newest technological means of mayhem are cyber, meaning anything involving the electronic transmission of ones and zeros. The development of cyber capabilities has been rapid and is continuing; doctrine is largely yet to be written; and ideas about control are only beginning to emerge.
