Cyber attack hits email users probing Russian intelligence

One of the world’s most secure email services has been caught up in a sophisticated cyber attack aimed at investigative journalists and other experts who are probing Russian intelligence activities.

Those targeted have used Swiss-based ProtonMail to share sensitive information related to their probes of Moscow’s military intelligence directorate, the GRU. Its agents have been accused of complicity in the downing of MH17 over Ukraine in 2014, and the attempted assassination of Sergei Skripal and his daughter last year in Britain.

Cyber Warfare: U.S. Military Admits Immediate Danger Is 'Keeping Us Up At Night'

Cyber warfare has reached a new phase this year—at least in terms of public awareness of the nature of the threat. Nothing is especially new, in truth, at least not capability-wise. But there has been one major development: increased levels of integration between the physical and cyber domains—cyber warfare as an interchangeable battlefield tool, an attack in one domain and retaliation in another. And the catalyst has been the Middle East, the continuing escalation of tensions between the U.S. (and its allies) and Iran. And the small matter of China and Russia—the world's leading cyber and hybrid warfare protagonists—lurking menacingly on the sidelines.

"When people ask me what keeps you up at night," Lt. Gen. Robert Ashley, the Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, told a cyber conference in Aspen last week, "that is kind of the thing that keeps me up at night."

America is woefully unprepared for cyber-warfare

War in cyberspace is fully on, and the United States is losing it, according to about two dozen national security experts.

The U.S. military is increasingly adept at mounting cyberattacks in places like Russia and Iran, but America’s computers are almost completely defenseless. Without strong protections, offensive attacks can be invitations for disaster instead of deterrents.

Cyber Warfare Threat Rises As Iran And China Agree ‘United Front’ Against U.S.

Last week, the ICT ministers of Iran and China met in Beijing in order to discuss “common challenges” in the face of “US unilateralism.” The countries looked into “ways to boost cooperation in the field of information technology and countering threats in cyberspace—and agreed to establish a joint workgroup to survey and counter those threats,” Iranian state media reported.
As a result of these developments, these two Untied States adversaries may eventually begin coordinating offensive cyber campaigns targeting US systems, which could lead to further escalations in cyberspace. The timing of the announcement is significant, since tensions between the US and Iran have escalated in recent weeks, while Washington is also engaged in fierce technological and trade competition with Beijing.
